I deleted the Jesse James reference because there is no historical evidence that Jesse James was ever in the area, much less Meramec Caverns. This legend was an invention of local tourist-trap promoter Lester Dill, who operated the caverns starting (I believe) in the '30s. A friend of mine who was a tour guide at the caverns told me the story he tells tours, which included the "fact" that Jesse discovered the caverns while he was passing through as part of Price's Raid during the Civil War, and revisited it as a hideout years later. Although part of Price's army did pass through this area, this claim is plainly false, since neither James brother was ever a part of this army. Further, I'm not convinced even the false legend should be mentioned here, because even though I believe the Caverns to be outside any city limits, they are more closely associated with the tiny neighboring community of Stanton than with Sullivan, itself.
